Guitar Hero: Van Halen was rumored long before the game became fact, and the promise of the title was, sadly, the high point of the game’s existence. It was shown at E3, although the kiosks with the game were devoid of players. It was given away with copies of Guitar Hero 5, which shows the level of confidence Activision had in the product. Can anyone honestly name all the fake-guitar games released this year without looking at a list? Do you feel like you need another one?
The first Guitar Hero title was released in November of 2005—that’s almost four years of Guitar Hero. We’re on the fifth sequel, if you count World Tour as the fourth title, which Activision apparently does. This may be called Guitar Hero, but you can use your microphone, and you can hook up your drum set. This is more World Tour 2 than it is Guitar Hero 5, but admitting that might mean that Band Hero would seem even more redundant when it comes out.
And of course, we’re not even counting the Nintendo DS titles, nor the band-specific releases like the bargain bin-tastic Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and the completely metal Guitar Hero: Metallica. The quality may be all over the place, but the strategy is clear: this series is going to be slammed down your throat until you choke. Besides, if you buy this, you’ll get Guitar Hero: Van Halen for free! If that doesn’t show you the kind of confidence everyone has in both of these releases, I don’t know what will.
The music blares, the notes come down, you play plastic instruments. Rhythm games are now a known quantity, and the novelty has certainly worn off. Is there enough of a jump here to justify the price of a new game, or are you better off buying more tracks for the Guitar Hero or Rock Band you already own? Let’s find out.
AP – President Barack Obama expressed confidence Saturday that efforts to scuttle Sonia Sotomayor’s nomination to the Supreme Court will fail despite intensified scrutiny of her judicial career. He said senators should work quickly to elevate the federal appeals judge.
“Taylor has a lot of confidence,” his “Twilight” director gushed to our Tim Kash when we dropped by her house this week. We specifically wanted to know what made Lautner — who’s gained twenty pounds of muscle for his “New Moon” role — so dang amazing.
In the video, you’ll hear Hardwicke reminisce over meeting Lautner for the first time, and auditioning for her right in her house. Watch it below, and then click here for the rest of our interview with the “Twilight” helmer. And, of course, don’t forget to tune into the MTV Movie Awards this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET to find out whether Taylor (or his fellow nominee Robert Pattinson) snag a golden popcorn.
Hey, remember the Nuvifone? Sure you do — it’s Garmin’s entry into the wide world of smartphones. You know, the company’s Linux-based, proprietary OS phone that’s heavy on GPS integration? Well according to a recent report, plans to launch the device in the first half of 2009 have stalled, with the company stating that it will be pushing the window back towards something closer to Q3. President and COO Cliff Pemble expounded on the difficulties of building a smartphone from scratch during a conference call with analysts, noting “Smartphones are complicated and bringing one to market that’s built totally from the ground up on a custom Linux platform is not an easy task.” If you’ll recall, the original announcement of the Nuvifone was way back in January of 2008, with a planned release in Q3 of that year — placing this new launch a full 12 months out from the intended street date. We’re all for competitors in this market, but it seems like maybe the folks at Garmin jumped the gun with all these dates they’ve been dropping on us — missed launches don’t exactly promote confidence.

Wolverine may be the best at what he does, but what he does unfortunately does not include starring in good games. Does anyone remember the last Wolverine title, where Mark Hamill voiced the spiky-haired antihero? The NES title where he mostly kicked at things? Wolverine may have been a great co-star in games like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance, but for such a beloved character he has been a crap leading man.
And now we have X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a game based on the movie that’s being almost universally panned by critics and fans alike. While we originally had little to no hope for the title, a demo at GDC showed an M-rated bloodbath with some sound mechanics, excellent level design, and an actual understanding of who—and what—the character is. The preview inspired so much confidence that someone created a rap song dedicated to the idea of the game not sucking.
